Academic Blog Overview
The blog assignment was a good challenge for me to write
consistently and thoughtfully on a range of different topics, some of which related
to my personal experiences, professional interests, or academic insights. This weekly
practice has helped me become a more consistent writer and helped with my writing
discipline.
One of
the most valuable aspects of the blog assignments was that I wrote regularly,
which forced me to maintain consistency in my writing practice over the summer.
Having to write every week also helped
me meet deadlines, even in the summer months when I don’t have other classes.
It has also sharpened my ability to take a vague topic or blog idea and make it
into my own, adding my own experiences, personality, and language into the
topic and my writing. The challenge is turning real-life experiences into
concise writing that engages a professional audience.
I enjoyed
having the freedom to write in my own personal style while still maintaining a professional tone, one that is natural to blog posts. This made it easier
to organize my thoughts and real-life experiences into blog
posts each month. It was also nice to have flexibility in my topic choices, but
I liked having optional ideas each week that I could choose from if I didn’t know
what to write about that particular week. Being able to select the topic meant I was actually interested and engaged in the issues I was writing about, which made the weekly assignment less daunting.
While I
generally liked the assignment, there were weeks when I felt the assignment was
repetitive. If the topics I chose for that week lacked variation, it became
difficult to come up with something unique for each one. I also felt that if I
didn’t like the optional topic ideas, it was sometimes hard to find a topic I
wanted to write about that week, which caused frustration before the writing
process began.
I believe that this assignment is very useful because it mirrors what many companies already do in the professional world. This assignment can serve as practice for a job I may have in my career later on. For me, writing these blog posts can encourage leadership and better communication skills. I can help articulate my ideas and work, and share them with coworkers or bosses, which can also allow me to explore new topics that I might not have tried before, causing me to think outside the box.
Overall,
I enjoyed this semester-long blog project and felt that it helped me establish
a more consistent writing schedule, providing valuable practice for the
professional writing I will need to do in my future job and career.
