Sit Still
We often get so caught up in being busy that we forget to take a moment to live in the present, uninterrupted and undistracted. This can be a challenge for those who are always on the go. As humans, we naturally seek the next achievement and strive for more, but when we allow ourselves to sit still, we begin to notice the small details that make life meaningful. These are aspects we may have overlooked in the past or taken for granted. In this exercise, I was instructed to sit for as long as I could without interruption and remain focused. Just leave me, my thoughts, and silence. This exercise is designed to slow down our brains and allow us to process what is happening around us without the distraction of our screens. This exercise would be most fulfilling when done sitting outside in nature.
I went outside on my porch, a spot I often frequent to do homework or even eat dinner on lovely summer days. Our house is situated right next to a pond, and you can usually hear all the noises coming from the trees and pond, especially during sunset, making it the perfect spot to sit still. My goal was to sit for at least 5 minutes, which can feel like a lot of time when all you are focused on is when the time will be up, but I was determined. At first, the silence was peaceful, and I could hear all the crickets chirping and the birds chirping. It felt nice to sit in peace and clarity. I noticed that my body was relaxed, but my mind was tense, which was surprising because I thought I would be nervous or that my mind would be racing the whole time. But surprisingly, it was nice, and I was able to appreciate nature and everything around me.
After this experience, I have learned that I should do this more and appreciate every moment for what it is. It is very easy for me to overlook the little stuff, but after this, I have to do this more. I also encourage others to make this a weekly, if not daily, part of their lives. It could change your perspective and make you appreciate the small things in life.
